Fun Activities With Kids in Boulder When It’s Cold

Winter in Boulder, Colorado, means the temps often dip below freezing! While I firmly believe in no bad weather, only bad gear, sometimes we prefer cozy inside activities instead of bundling up.

If you’re searching for fun activities with kids in Boulder when the weather turns chilly, here are three of our family’s favorites.

CATS Gymnastics

CATS Gymnastics offers several teams, classes, and camps. However, for those who simply want a fun place to hang out inside and let their kids burn off steam, they also offer several Open Gyms throughout the week.

Several mornings a week, there’s an open gym for crawlers through age five. The days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday from 9:30 to 11.  As of January 2024, it’s a drop-in rate of $10 per kid. Or, if you plan to go regularly, you can save money with a punch card.

School-age kids between 6 and 15 can enjoy open gym time on Saturdays from 1:30 to 3. As of January 2024, the rate is $15 per drop-in session. Or, you can save money with a punch card.

Older teens and adults who are 15 years and older have the option of two different open gyms. There’s the adult open gym Monday-Thursday from 8-10 pm and the climbing open gym from 6:30-10 pm Monday-Thursday. As of January 2024, the rate is $10 per drop-in session, or you can save money with a punch card.

CU Museum of Natural History

If you want a free activity, check out the CU Museum of Natural History! It is in the Henderson Building on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. Each exhibit has kid-friendly activities, and there is a playroom in the basement. The playroom has a treehouse, a light box, sensory activities, and more!

Admission is free, and the museum is open daily, Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Go for a Swim at a Recreation Center

Boulder is home to three recreation centers. Each recreation center has a pool with various open swim times. There are several different price points for accessing the pool. You can pay a day rate, purchase a punch pass, pay a monthly membership fee, or save off the monthly membership fee with an annual membership.

Amenities vary between the different rec centers. There are saunas, hot tubs, and water slides between the three facilities. Rules are generally the same between the three aquatic centers. Children under six must always have an adult in the pool with them, and kids between 6 and 9 require an adult on the pool deck or directly supervising them.

Have Fun!

One of the benefits of living in or near Boulder is that there are plenty of activities to enjoy! These three activities only scratch the surface of fun activities for kids in Boulder when it's cold.

If you don’t feel like getting outside, there are also several ways to be creative with indoor fun right at home. Put on a movie and pop some popcorn, play a new board game, try your hand at a new craft, or put together a sensory bin filled with snow and scoops. The possibilities are endless!
